Turns out picking the right scale label for your retail business is the same concept! How so? Maybe you’re not using the right label size to maximize the information for your product. Or perhaps your labels aren’t sticking and falling off before items make it out of the store.

If any of these have your mind turning, it may be time to consider a little extra help.

So if you’re in need of more information on what scale label is the best choice for your retail business, this article is meant for you.

MAIN ELEMENTS OF SCALE LABELS

Scale labels differ from other pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) labels when it comes to the information you’ll need to consider.

So when it comes time to pick the right option, it’s just as important to cover all of your label knowledge bases.

Here’s what you need to consider before you buy your next batch of scale labels:

PRINTER COMPATIBILITY

You can’t think about scale labels without considering the scale printer they’ll be used in. That’s like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the peanut butter; both are equally important!

However, scale labels will only work with their compatible printer brand. This means CAS labels will only work with CAS printers, Hobart labels with Hobart printers, and so on.

So what about buying labels through a 3rd party supplier

You’ll still need to make sure to match the label with its compatible printer for them to work properly.

DIFFERENT SCALE PRINTER TYPES

Printer compatibility is one thing. But it’s not just about matching your labels with the right printer brand. Scale printers range in different services across the retail industry, such as:

  • Counter – used by employees
  • Auto-wrap – used with little employee interaction
  • Self-Service – used by customers

You’ll need to consider these scale printer types to determine which labels are best suited in that department.

For example, if your butchery utilizes an auto-wrap scale printer, choosing non-perforated labels can prevent the liner from tearing and causing unnecessary maintenance downtime.

Or switching to linerless labels for your deli’s counter scales can reduce roll replacement during peak business hours for increased workplace efficiency.

LABEL DIMENSIONS, LENGTH, & WIDTH

Back to basics, I always say. Well…maybe not always, but when it comes to any kind of label, basics is definitely where you want to start.

In this case, that would be all things label size. First, let’s talk about dimensions.

Depending on your scale printer brand, you’ll have to consider the right dimensions to coincide with your printer: for scale labels that’s either in millimeters (mm) or inches (in).

Here’s a quick break down of some popular brands and the label dimensions they use:

  • CAS – Millimeters
  • DIGI – Millimeters
  • Ishida – Millimeters
  • Hobart – Inches
  • Mettler Toledo – Inches

Next, consider label length. Ask yourself specific questions about the information you’ll be printing on your scale labels to determine a proper length.

Will your labels need to wrap fully around the product or act as a seal over a container?  Or maybe you just need to include basic sales information on the scale label, like prices and dates?

Remember, depending on the information you require for each product, you’ll want to use the right amount of real estate (that’s just fancy talk for space) on your label.

And finally, consider the label width. There’s a delicate balance when it comes to using the right label width.

While you want scale labels wide enough to include necessary information, you also don’t want them to exceed the maximum print width of your scale printer.

ADHESIVE STRENGTH

Choosing the right adhesive is like adding the final piece to the label puzzle; it’s incomplete without it.

The industries that utilize scale labels apply them to products that range in many different temperatures and surfaces. So it’s important to consider different adhesive types to get the best tack. These include:

  • All temperature
  • Permanent
  • Freezer grade

Remember, it’s crucial that labels adhere to their respective products until they reach the end of their life cycle (i.e. get thrown away).

OTHER KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Now that you have some ideas about the specifics of scale labels, it’s worth noting that there might be other components to consider when choosing the right option.

So let’s discuss other factors you should consider before hitting the “purchase” button on your next scale label order.

APPLICATION

Like mentioned above with adhesive strength, the application of your scale label matters a great deal.

Scale labels must be able to withstand different temperatures without compromising their quality or readability. That’s why what and where they’re being applied is so important.

So ask yourself what type of environment will your scale labels be used in:

  • Will the area be refrigerated or unrefrigerated?
  • Will humidity or moisture be a concern?

Also, think about the actual product your labels are being applied to. Both hot and cold products have their own issues with proper application so always consider if temperature will be a factor.

PREPRINTED LABELS & CUSTOMIZATION

Scale labels are direct thermal (DT), so they are incapable of printing in color. Therefore, if color is what you desire, you’ll have to buy them preprinted.

Preprinted labels are a great way to call attention to variable information, such as:

  • Sell by or use by dates
  • Prices
  • Weight

Preprinted labels can also include specific messages you want displayed on your products. This can look like:

  • Allergen warnings
  • Food prep instructions
  • Nutritional data
  • Certifications

Numbers and information aren’t the only things you can consider including on your scale labels. Customization with unique colors, text, fonts, and images can help elevate your brand apart from competitors.

For example, adding ‘thank you’ messages or your brand logo can make scale labels more eye-catching to customers.

NOW YOU KNOW!

Yes, there’s a lot to consider when it comes to choosing the right scale label for your retail business.

But knowing this information and why it matters will help you choose the best option to fit your needs!

Remember, when it comes to printing and applying, the right label can make all the difference.
